From the shore——-The islands are scattered on the right—-straight ahead is the lake of the feline—–named thus for the effect created when the coureurs de Bois’ and voyageurs’ boats would get from the many dangerous rocks scratching at their undersides when descending the rapids which brought to mind the clawing of cats—–here all types of fish swim about for the picking for a tasty breakfast—-the light house, the beautiful rivers across—to the left is found the old canal with it’s manicured trees, amazing relaxed waters, waters that once harbored steamship tours from the Kichi Zibi Mikan to Black Bay where me and my girlfriend fished with cooked shrimp and once as children my cousin and I watched a massive small mouth bass rise to the surface and gulp a huge piece of pink chewing gum we had thrown in beyond the sun heated rocks on the shore—–the light on the water when the fish feed at dawn, the brilliant whitecaps during storms—-the weed line divide of the shallows and the deeps beyond, the hummingbirds speeding about like bright individual Chinese jinguo lines of health and retribution.
Major Annual Ottawa Region Powwows
- Annual Children and Youth Powwow: Typically held in mid-to-late spring (April) at the EY Centre. This free community gathering focuses on youth empowerment and features baby welcoming, first-time dancer ceremonies, traditional drumming, and local craft vendors. [1]
- Odawa Powwow: Hosted annually in late May by the Odawa Native Friendship Centre. Located centrally at 815 St. Laurent Blvd, it is a community-driven celebration packed with traditional dancing, music, and food vendors. [1, 2]
- Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival Competition Powwow: Ottawa’s largest powwow occurs in mid-June at Wesley Clover Parks. Coinciding with National Indigenous Peoples Day, this massive international competition brings together top-tier dancers and drummers from across Turtle Island competing for over $100,000 in prizes. [1, 2, 3]
- Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn Traditional Pow Wow: Located roughly an hour and a half west of Ottawa in Golden Lake, this powerful traditional ceremony takes place in mid-August. It welcomes everyone to experience grand entries, evening social dances, and authentic Indigenous foods like Indian tacos. [1]
I am looking forward to hitting these powwows next Spring and Summer.
Maybe a baseball game up a couple blocks at: Ottawa’s primary professional baseball team is the Ottawa Titans, who are the reigning 2026 Frontier League Champions. [1]
The team captured their historic first league championship in late September 2026 by defeating the Evansville Otters, a massive milestone that coincided perfectly with the city of Ottawa’s Bicentennial celebration. [1, 2]
4-5 years ago I think it was I found free baseball ticket print-outs at Kijiji, so I printed a massive amount and tacked them to the bulletin board in the building entrance. They were all taken. THAT game I watched as the Shikoku Islanders lost their last game out of seven to Ottawa and during this last game a Japanese batter lost it in the dug-out, threw a bat and yelled his frustration like a champ but they lost.
