The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien,

The story of Beren and Luthien is very beautiful.

They get together, a mortal man and an elven girl, head into Morgoth’s realm, steal jewels from his crown which are those magic crystal balls we have in the Ring trilogy. All with the companionship of Huan, a large dog creature. Morgoth is Sauron’s master, so it’s pretty heavy shit.

As a kid I always wanted the story of Beren and Luthien to be made into a movie and Luthien to be played by a woman like Liv Tyler AND she did end up playing the elven queen who marries Striker in Minith Tirith at the end of book three in the movies directed by Jackson.

It is a great read. The book centers on such tales but also it begins with the creation of Middle Earth and the whole planet with their gods, by music. It’s well thought out. I am always impressed by Tolkien’s created languages, characters, good natured story telling, dragons, elves, uruk-hai, wizards, it’s all great, especially at 15. J.R.R. Tolkien was a really great artist as well.

Many artistic creations influenced me, Tolstoy’s Cossaques was immeasurably AMAZING for example, but before I delved into the wonders of classic literature, books like the Silmarillion were an escape to a world of beauty far from the strain of adolescence in which I was subject to all that stress and crazy routine, ‘xcept for the odd party, lol!!
