Mahakashyapa
Ubumbara bloom
Buddha teaching his sangha
One smiles at the back
NKFM
The Ubumbara is Sanskrit for “auspicious flower from heaven”. Texts like the Lotus Sutra describe encountering it as a rare event which symbolizes encountering something rare and wonderful in one’s life, like the Buddha’s teaching.
Since the late 1990s beginning with sightings on a Buddha statue at Chonggyesa Temple in Seoul, South Korea in 1997, tiny white or stem-like flowers have been reported blooming on non-traditional surfaces like glass, metal, paper, and Buddha statues. They may be eggs of green lacewings, but proponents maintain the clusters open into fragrant miniature flowers.

THE FLOWER AND SMILE SERMON
According to tradition, Buddha Shakyamuni gathered his disciples on Gridhrakuta or Vulture Peak and instead of speaking, he simply held up a white flower—often traditionally identified as an Udumbara or a lotus. None of the disciples understood the meaning except for the older Mahakashyapa at the back of the sangha who looked at the flower and broke into a subtle smile.
