Jumbo

Jumbo the elephant was an African male, huge in size, and in my mind the weirdest phenomenon ever. Let me explain why. A tamed male African loxodonta, huge beast, can be extremely aggressive in nature. But, Jumbo was a puppy hearted thing, very kind and wise to my knowledge, taking the children around for rides on his back at the fairs, this and that. And this is when it gets tricky. Every once in a while, late at night when he was chained up, not excessively tied, but perhaps a foot I think I read, Jumbo would go bananas. He would flip out, had given enough of himself, kept his cool long enough, and would let loose. But according to what I read, even at these instances, his outbursts seemed to be selfcontained, self directed. He loved and cared, I believe, SO much, that he kept others out of harm’s way. The tip toe of a giant, with a wink to the world at night.
