An Evening Maybe 15 Years Ago

So it was mid Nov. and my aching eyes needed a pair of shades, my stomach a fine meal, and my feet some heart pounding Ceili dance.

They came to pick me up in their burgundy Cadillac Eldorado, spewing the essence of Christ our Saviour in fine Newborn Christian form all the way from shoot or get shot Rockland to Rideau Falls, sound-tracked to Tony Benett, Julio Iglesias, and a little-known guitarist who’s name evades me now but who actually plays pretty good.

The drive was tumultuous, burnouts, crazy traffic, skids, and a lot of shouting. We even pulled one of those sideways wheelies for a couple of blocks before the cops pulled rank, blocked our way and begged us to stop making them laugh.

THERE WAS THE LEGION HALL! A hall not dissimilar to the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles except for the fact that it did not resemble it at all. Our course on aim, there, awaited us, the life affirming dish of Baked Eggplant Parmesan followed by a chocolate mousse and the Americano hun for myself.

ENTERTAINMENT

An Elvis impersonator climbed the stage, which is a very appreciated and followed scene here I was told, especially in Gatineau Q.C.

“We can’t go on together….with suspicious minds….”

Hilarity before our eyes! Bizarre this, adoring the music of a man long deceased, performed by die-hard worshiping fans, dressed to the nines, pulling all the stops. It’s serious stuff!! Quite an enjoyable spectacle. A buzz! Quite fun!

Then, it was time to hit the dancefloor. centipede, no grab, yes shoulder pawing as we swayed to and fro led in wide circles by the whims of the leader and the calling of the participants bursting with joy. Some well deserved gettin jiggy wit it, let me tell ya! Oh ya!!! Then, the most mesmerizing part of the evening for me… A cool slow dance to a ballad. I asked a military chick dressed in full uniform if she would be so inclined, I was thrilled when she agreed. We held each other close hand in hand, hands on our waists, backs, and just let things happen naturally.

After the party was over we jumped back into the beast from Detroit. Detroit, where “the Hitman” Thomas Hearns I’m sure still shadow boxes in the wake of Teofimo Lopez, Canelo, and Naoya Inoue. A wake he created! one spark!

Lol! Thank you for reading! A kind of memory laden night sort of…

Cheers!!!

Nico
